The policy (not law - GameStop and Malwart will claim that there is a law, but they're lying to avoid arguments) is to ensure that the parent can't come back and yell at the store for "exposing" their precious child to content they disapprove of. Occasionally, you'll get some undertrained or power-tripping employee try to pull the "I can't sell that to you if I know a kid will play it" card, but this is total nonsense, and will result in that employee being shitcanned if Corporate finds out about it - lost sales are lost sales. In other words, this is exactly the scenario the writers of the policy intended.

Former Gamestop employee here. There is nothing more satisfying than telling a spoiled, bratty, little kid, that he's not allowed to buy "GTA AYE WEE". Period. But I always resepcted parents decisions. In many cases (most, really) parents aren't aware of age recommendations (because that's what they are, not restrictions) and have little knowledge of the games, their kids wants to play. In many of those cases, the parents opted to not buy the game for their kid. I would never, however, tell a parent, that I couldn't sell them an M-rated/PEGI 18 game. But if the kids came into the store alone, I was told by my boss not to sell them the games. But sometimes the kids would bring a written note or have me call their parents for approval, which was cool. But spoiled, bratty kids are the worst. One father bought a PS3, an XBOX 360 and a metal detector (he told me) for his boy for x-mas. And he had the most annoying, entitled, little bratty shit I've ever met.

I once went to gamestop with my dad to buy a pegi 12 game when I was eleven. My dad stood next to me and I gave the clerk the money and he said that he couldn’t take the money out of my hand. Then my dad said out loud “Goddam what a joke” and pulled out his credit card and paid for it. My hero lol.

My mom was a firm beliver that violent games were bad for me as a kid... my dad was not on the same opinion and usually got me the games I wanted, I remember especially well when my dad got me san andreas and it was on the news for being a game where you would murder hookers and rape women so when my mom saw that my dad gave it to me she got very mad and forbade me to play it, so I used to sneak it out in my killzone case and play it at a friends house.. ahh glorious days.
